Synopsis: Miss Marple, whilst collecting for her favourite cause, arrives at Mr. Enderby's house to find him staggering down stairs to his death. All his relatives benefit equally from his will but his sister, Mrs. Lansquenet, believes he was murdered. Miss Marple has one clue, a piece of hardened mud found near the body, and with this she gets on the trail. Mrs Lansquenet is the next victim. The whole family congregate at 'The Gallop', Hector Enderby's hotel, where another death narrows the field. Miss Marple, convinced of the identity of the murderer, tricks him into coming out into the open.
